Day 12 - A Film By Your Least Favorite Director

I already mentioned Paul Haggis and Crash. No point in rehashing that or bringing up more of his awful movies. I figure I'll go with a director who I don't like -- who has a movie that I actually like.

Is there anybody left out there at all that likes M. Night Shyamalan? Its not so much that he is a bad director or storyteller -- he just tells really awful stories. I never cared for Sixth Sense -- and then his filmography is just a what's what in embarrassing movies movies.

But one shining beacon of badassness is Unbreakable. I tend to think that M. Night didn't even know he was making a good movie. Scratch that. He probably always thinks he's making a good movie, but this time he really did. Too bad its book ended by the stupid reference to comics at the beginning and the awful "surprise ending" which is less of an ending and more of a "oh yeah, and in case you didn't figure it out." Everything in between is everything an M. Night movie should be -- a super hero movie that builds up to one single shot 30 second choke hold!

I don't really know how to gauge favorite director. Like favorite movie -- it would just be a long stupid list. So, I'm going to go with this logic...

There is one director in particular who has only made two films -- but I absolutely cannot wait until his 3rd. It's about alien abductions. But this second movie of his -thus far- in his 2 movie career is what solidified this guy as my current favorite (in a fair-weather-fan kind of way.)

Winter 2006. Erin and I drive to Chicago to watch David Lynch present a screening of his new movie, Inland Empire, at midnight at the Music Box Theatre. So after a 5 hour drive, we make it to Chicago in the snow, eat, wait out in the fuckin' freeezin' cold for an hour, enter the film, watch David Lynch step on stage under a red spot light to read a poem he wrote, and then watch his nutty 3 hour movie till past 3AM.

Day 5: a film that reminds you of someone(s)

Basically every movie reminds me of someone on some level. And I don't know if this category means that the movie reminds you of the experience of watching it with someone or if the movie actually reminds you of someone. I think the latter is stupid. So I'll go with a movie that reminds of the experience of watching it with someone. And many awesome movie watching experiences took place with my fellow Baylor Bears. But many film watching experiences define my relationship with them -- both back then (college) and well after. We're talking from watching Amores Perros in 2000, with Irish Bobby claiming that those were without a doubt REAL dead dogs ("It's fucking Mexico. They don't have any laws there."), or Max Payne, halloween weekend 2008, starring Marky Mark ("Get it? Like Maximum Pain... it's a play on words."). But nothing says "movie that reminds me of the Waco 'Staches" more than watching David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. Dirty bitches, creepy tiny old people, mother fucking cowboys, and No Hay Banda. Most of them didn't really know what they were getting into -- mainly Irish Bobby.

I'm starting to not really understand any of these categories.

Day 4: A movie you watch to feel BAD.

I'm not sure what that means. I presume that bad just means, 'not good.' So with that said, there is very few movies I watch to feel not good. And its not that I even chose to watch these movies in the first place -- to not feel good. It just turns out that I didn't feel good, once the film was over. I think the first instinct is to mention depressing movies, but depressing movies don't really bother me. I quite enjoy them. Thus, they don't make me feel bad. So that leaves out movies like Birth, Wendy & Lucy, Breaking the Waves. So a movie that comes to mind when I think of movies I've watched and did not feel good afterward is Gaspar Noe's Irreversible. I had heard about some reaction to the film, but I suppose I wasn't completely paying attention. I happen to watch the movie at home, by myself, at 2am. And while in most ways the film is incredible, basically... I felt "bad" after it was finished.

But of course, the film I expect to top Irreversible is A Serbian Film. I just refuse to watch it online... thus far.

NHRA Drag Race Day -- Charlotte, NC

Long day at the race track. There are a few things I can tell you about NHRA drag race cars besides that I have a dumb ass look on my face while mounting cameras inside the pit tent. These fucking race cars are big, strong, loud, dangerous and will burn your eyes and destroy your hearing -- and could quite possibly melt your face. I feel a little bad about putting my camera crew in danger -- but we all suffered on some level.

Day 3: A film you watch to feel good.

I don't like the way that is worded -- but that's what day 3 says, so I'll go with.

There is one film I watch in particular "to feel good" I guess. In fact, there is one scene in particular, in one film that I watch "to feel good" -- I guess. That scene is the boxing scene from City Lights, as the Tramp attempts to win prize fight earnings to help with the finances of his struggling, blind, and mis-led girlfriend. The end of the fight when he has the bell string wrapped around his neck fucks my shit up... in that "feel good" kind of way.

But for good measure I have to post one other film -- because no matter how much I fight the good feelings the film gives off, I can't fucking help it. I succumb to that joyous little Poulain every-fucking-time. And I hate her for it.

Day 2: Least favorite movie

Since today is 9-11, it is only fitting that I hate on some of that "post 9-11 cinema" bullshit. Anybody who knows me well, knows this: I fucking hate Paul Haggis films. Beyond the self-importance and shallow pathos he provides in both scriptwriting and directing in every single one of his films, he managed to top all that is awful about his work with his "passion project" that was inspired by the painful yet enlightening event of his porche being carjacked from him on Wilshire Blvd -- Crash. Wikipedia provides all the incriminating evidence one needs to judge Haggis. After viewing Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup, he felt compelled to move to London to become a fashion photographer. He was a self-proclaimed atheist until he discovered the Church of Scientology -- whom he had a fall out with 35 years later, which led to a serious public cat fight. I don't know if he's an idiot, but his films are idiotic. I'm not saying that a rich middle-aged white guy who got rich off of creating Walker, Texas Ranger, who traumatically got his porche stolen from him (probably by a black or mexican guy) can't teach me anything about the great racial divide in our country from his perspective -- I'm just saying Paul Haggis can't.

Plus we're talking about the film that first made America think that Sandra Bullock can act. Give me Miss Congeniality 2 any day.

SO -- since John and Bart have been doing the 30 music thing -- I've decided to do it as well. But in my case, I should probably do movies. I'm just going to use the exact same categories, but will translate them into movies instead. That makes...

Day 1: Favorite Movie

I don't have a favorite movie OR I have too many favorite movies. I haven't the slightest clue what criteria to go by. I've seen Tim Burton's Batman 1 billion times. As a young teen I was obsessed with bloody epics or anything by Michael Mann. There's Chaplin. There's Malick. There's Kar Wai Wong. There's more recent films like All the Real Girls, Birth, I'm Still Here. Different movies at different times have had pretty profound effects on my life and career -- starting as a 4 year old, elementary, to high school, to college, to post college life. We're talking everything from Pee Wee's Big Adventure to Half Nelson.

There is one film that I am most known to love by my friends. And while technically, I wouldn't even say this is his best movie, and depending on the day, maybe not even my favorite -- but at the age of 18, and trying to decide what was going to be the next step in my life - Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia provided a significant amount of answers.

Below is the first stop at the Blue Swallow Motel on Route 66 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Each room has a garage and garage door and everyone is greeted by their two dogs. The entire Motel has been untouched since the 3o's. The owners say "I hope you join US for coffee in the morning." And its true, they have coffee with you in the morning (when they aren't out and about wearing red wigs guiding French filmmakers around).

Occasionally I like to write about my strange encounters with public figures/celebrities. The last one I can remember was about getting hotwing sauce on Blagojevich. Well now I have a Maya Lin story. At the last minute, I was included in a meeting and lunch with St. Louis representatives and Maya Lin to talk about a possible art/architecture project. I did some documenting of this encounter and the early day site visit. Before lunch started, I asked her assistant, who I coincidentally went to architecture school with and have known for some time, what he thought Maya Lin was thinking. His answer was, "She told me she thinks your hot."

I never found out what she thought about the possible project.
